In the new Hvissinge East development in Glostrup, Copenhagen, nominated for the danish Urban Planning Prize in 2007, you’ll find Villa KRAM, aka the Hug House. This home for two families is a proposal on how a low-energy house can be designed with a lot of amazing experiences and be optimized for the local potentials. The project is thus an exercise in how the architectural freedom can flourish in tandem with the extensive requirements for low-energy buildings.

Villa Kram by architect couple Natallia and Pelle Sørensen was presented to guests of the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit in December 2009 as a showcase for sustainable living.

The house includes new construction types, new types of insulation and heat pump technology for ventilation and hot water.

The concept behind Villa KRAM is based on exploiting the advantages of living several families in one house. This means space saving in walking areas, since the two families staircases run above each other. A 13 meter high skylight shaft is placed as a central constructive element, which in addition to providing light for the stairs and basement, also serves as a technical control room where the two families can keep an eye on energy consumption. By focusing on accessibility and visibility of energy monitoring equipment for the house architects wanted to make a sport to reduce consumption. Lighting shaft has become a popular common area and a distinctive room in the house.

Since the building has three levels, the experience from this project may be used both for prefabricated low-budget construction and in larger buildings. It represents a new category between a single-family house and an apartment block with the best of both worlds including a smaller surface to insulate for both homes.

Behind the project there is a team of two architects with their studios - Manifold and Infusion, and a group of partners from both executive and advisory firms in the construction industry.
